Easter isn't all about Easter eggs! This wood slice bunny DIY is a cute craft for spring or Easter decorations. In my step-by-step tutorial, I'll show you how to make rustic wooden bunnies from wood slices to use as fun ornaments in your spring décor. You'll learn how to make some bunny ears and decorate the bunnies using pretty dried flowers, ribbons, and a cute Easter sign. Lastly, we'll use craft paint to paint the bunnies with the cutest bunny rabbit face you've ever seen!

If you saw my spring season tablescape last week, you may have noticed the wood pieces or wood slices scattered around the table. I love using rustic wooden slices in my table decorations and round wood slices as coasters for glasses.

When I was decorating the spring tablescape last week, I thought it might be fun to use some of the leftover large wood slices to make another fun Easter craft for an Easter tablescape. You should be able to find most of the supplies for this easy project at your local craft store.

Instructions for making a wood slice bunny

Cut and drill

For the first step of this easy DIY, use a saw to cut a small piece off one side of the wood slice. You only need to do this if making standing wood slice bunnies. If making wood slice hanging ornaments, you can skip this step.

Next, using a drill with a small drill bit, drill four holes into the top of a wood slice. You will need to drill two holes on each side. The holes are for the wire that we will be using to make the bunny ears.

Make bunny ears

Once the holes are drilled, it's time to make the bunny ears from some pieces of floral wire. My bunny ears are quite large, you could make smaller ears if you like. To bend the floral wire into the shape of bunny ears, I first wrapped it around a candle. The candle I'm using has a diameter of 6 cm/2.4 inches. Repeat this step until you have all of the ear shapes you need for your wood slice bunnies.

PRO TIP: Oval pieces of wood can be used to make bunny ears instead of wire. If you have wood scraps in your craft bin this could be a great way of using them up.

Now that all of the wire ears are made, we can attach them to the wood slices. To attach the ears, all you need to do is drip a small amount of wood glue over each hole before slipping the wire ears into the holes. Allow the wood glue to dry completely before attempting the next step.

TIP: Just like craft glue, wood glue dries transparent so there's no need to worry that it will be seen once it's dry.

Next, we are going to bend the bunny ears into shape. Squeeze the tip of the bunny ears together with your fingers to make them a more oval shape. I wanted to make one of the bunny ears on each rabbit floppy so I bent it down a little bit until I was happy with the shape.

Decorate with flowers

Now that the base of our bunny is complete, the next step will be to decorate it with dried flowers. I ordered a pretty bouquet of dried flowers in creamy whites and pinks from Etsy for this project. Select a few flower stems and use the glue gun to attach them to the top part of the wood slice bunny.

TIP: Arrange flower stems onto the wood slice bunnies before gluing them to see how they look.

Add ribbon and sign

Next, we'll add a little bit of simple decoration to the bunny ears. First, cut a small length of ribbon and attach it to one of the bunny ears in a simple knot.

I used Canva to make the 'Happy Easter' tag. If you are using your wood slice bunnies as placeholders, you could add the person's name instead if you like.

Print off the signs on white printer paper or craft paper and use a paper cutter to cut them out. Use scissors to cut one end so that the tags look like banners.

Cut a slightly longer strip of pink paper in the same pattern as above and use a craft stick to glue it behind the 'Happy Easter' tag.

Fold the end of the tag over and attach it to a wire bunny ear with craft glue.

Make a bunny face

Now, our DIY wood slice bunny is almost finished. All that's left to do is to make a cute bunny face. A great way to find cute designs for your bunny face is by searching 'bunny faces' on Google.

To make the bunny eyes, I used black acrylic paint. First, I used a paintbrush to create a squiggly line then, I painted in some eyelashes. A heart shape makes the cutest bunny nose with a tiny spot of white paint on one side.

Add some dots of white paint over the top of the bunny eyes for freckles.

To make the cutest bunny rabbit cheeks, mix a tiny spot of red acrylic paint into the white paint and mix well until you have a soft pink color. Use a piece of absorbent paper to dab some of the pink paint onto the wood slice bunny where the cheeks would be. Immediately rub the paint off again with more absorbent kitchen paper. You are looking to create a smudged effect, a bit like using eye shadow on your eyes.

That's all there is to making a rustic wood slice bunny!
