Valentine's Day tiered tray décor and DIYs - Chalking Up Success! (2024)

If you're looking for an easy way to add some fun to your Valentine's Day home décor, look no further. Today, I'm sharing homemade Valentine's Day, tiered tray décor, plus some ready-made tiered tray sets to buy. So, if you're stuck for ideas on how to decorate and style a tiered tray for Valentine's or how to make a Valentine centrepiece, this post is for you. Let me help you spread a little love this February 14th.

Why are tiered trays popular?

The beauty of tiered trays is that they take up so little space there is no danger of them getting in the way. Unlike other types of décor, tiered trays can be easily lifted to another area should more space be required.

Tiered trays are also popular because they are versatile and an easy and fun way to decorate. Aside from February 14th, two or three-tiered trays can easily be re-styled with décor throughout each season.

Because tiered tray décor is usually in a mini format, scraps of wood, paper or fabric etc., can be used up to make DIY tiered tray décor. See below for some beautiful examples of this.

DIY Valentine's Day tiered tray decor

For today's holiday craft, I'm decorating a two-tiered tray with homemade valentine's and Farmhouse décor. Let's get started with an easy mini pink heart sign.

How to make a mini tiered tray sign for Valentine's Day

Supplies for making a heart wood sign

  • A piece of scrap wood (mine 3x3 inch / 8x8 cm)
  • Sandpaper (Grade 120)
  • Damp rag
  • String in three shades of pink Pink
  • Construction paper
  • Silver florist's wire
  • Heart stamp
  • Double-sided sticky tape

Instructions - Mini heart sign for tiered trays (See process photos below)

  1. First, rub the piece of wood all over with sandpaper to make it smooth.
  2. Wipe the wood with a damp rag to remove the sanding dust.
  3. Cut a heart shape from pink construction paper.
  4. Stick the heart shape to the woodblock with double-sided sticky tape. Using double-sided sticky tape instead of adhesive means that you can remove the paper heart later then, use the wood to make a different sign.
  5. Use a mini stamping kit to stamp hearts onto the pink paper heart.
  6. Wrap the coloured string around the woodblock and secure it at the back with a knot.
  7. Using the silver florist's wire, make the word 'love'. Make sure to leave enough wire before and after the word 'love' to make a spiral on each side and for tying the wire together at the back of the sign.
  8. Wrap a length of wire around a pencil on each side of the word 'love' to make a spiral.
  9. Wrap the wire around the woodblock over the top of the coloured string. Twist the wire together at the back to secure it in place.
  10. Push a piece of absorbent paper underneath the wire. Using nail varnish, gently brush over the loop in the letter 'L' and 'E'. Allow the nail varnish to dry then repeat once more.
  11. For increased height, stand your mini tiered tray sign on top of some wood slices or something similar.
  12. Your mini tiered tray sign is complete!

DIY wood sign 'LOVE' (vertical)

This simple Valentine's DIY uses scrap wood and will bring height to the top tier of your tiered tray décor.

DIY 'LOVE' sign supplies

Instructions (See process photos below)

  1. Rub the piece of wood with sandpaper until it becomes smooth. Wipe with a damp cloth and allow to dry.
  2. Using wood glue, attach the wooden alphabet letters 'LOVE' to the length of wood vertically as shown. Allow to dry, according to the instructions of your adhesive.
  3. Gently brush over the wood sign with white wax using a wax brush.
  4. Wrap twine around the bottom end of the sign and tuck the end in at the back.
  5. Attach some dried flowers (I used thistle petals) to the top of the string.
  6. Glue a small paper heart on top of the dried flowers.
  7. Stand the wood sign vertically on the top tier of your Valentine's Day tray.

TIP: If you don't have white wax on hand, any white water-based paint will do the job just as well. If you are going for a vintage Valentine's effect, make sure to brush off most of the water-based paint onto a piece of kitchen paper first.

Where to put a tiered tray

Now that you have your Valentine's tiered tray and have decorated it to your heart's content, it's time to find the perfect place to display it.

  • Kitchen counter - Place your beautifully styled Valentine's tray in a prime position for all to admire. A great place to put a tiered tray would be on your kitchen counter or island if you have one.

The photo below shows my Valentine's Day tiered on our kitchen countertop.

  • Tiered tray table decor - Tiered trays also make great table centrepieces for kitchen and dining tables.
  • Coffee table decor - A tiered tray will look pretty on a coffee table and won't take up too much room.
  • Console table - Place your tiered tray on a console table in the hallway as a fun greeting for guests.

As mentioned at the beginning of this post, tiered trays are very versatile decor items to have at home. You can easily have them on display all year round changing out the decor items with the seasons.

How to store a tiered tray

What if you don't want to have a tiered tray on display all year round, won't it just get in the way?

Tiered trays, usually come flat packed which means that you need to screw each tier together before you can use it. That means, that you can easily disassemble a tiered tray for storage purposes.

After disassembling, store your tiered tray in a bag or box to avoid it collecting dust. You could also just wrap it in some newspaper until it's next needed.

TIP: After disassembling your tiered tray, tape the screws and washers to the underside of one of the tiers. That way, you won't lose them.
